Swatches & Review of the Becca Balearic Love Eye Shadow Palette

This new limited edition eye shadow trio palette from Becca Cosmetics from their Balearic Love Collection. It consists of deep, rich shades that is designed to create sensuous eyes in tones of bronzed plum and violet.

Packaging
The palette has Becca's signature dark brown smooth, slightly "rubberised" exterior (reminiscent of Nars' blush & eyeshadow packaging). The palette feels quite light so it's convenient to carry around and it's quite sleek and simple. I do like their palette packaging. It comes with a large mirror and the eye shadow pans themselves are slotted into a reflective / mirror-like bit of plastic plating. The palette also comes with a mini eye shadow brush, which wasn't included in the sample I got, but I assume it's the same brush as the other eye shadow palette brushes that I have gotten previously, which are actually useable and good quality particularly for lining the eyes and defining the outer creases of the eyes (see Becca Enigma Palette HERE and in comparison photo below).

The Colours & Textures
There seems to be discrepancies between the description on the label at the bottom of the palette and the  box packaging (see above photo) versus what's described in their press release HERE (in terms of the colours and textures of the shadows).  'Demi matte' eye shadows are described to "contain super-fine shimmer for the subtlest sheen". However, to me, both the lightest and darkest shades in the palette do not seem to contain any visible sheen at all when swatched, so I would say this colour in particular was just matte. The deepest shade shows the barest amount of sheen.  [Note, I was sent this sample palette by Becca Cosmetics to try, and this has yet to be released, so I do hope they will have made these corrections before they come out!]  All of the eye shadows appear true to colour when swatched.
  • Eye Colour Powder (Matte) – Atlas: the lightest shade in the palette is a soft beige taupe.
  • Eye Colour Powder (Matte) – Romal: the darkest shade in the palette is a dark brown-based smoke (In full sun, it has the slightest hint of purple.  Indoors it's definitely a real dark smokey brown).
  • Eye Colour Powder (Shimmer) – Marcella: a gorgeous bronze plum violet (lots of multi-coloured fine shimmers).
With the exception of 'Atlas', I found the texture and quality of the eye shadows to be excellent.  They are very soft, smooth, finely milled powder that is just effortless to blend.  They are not chalky at all.  They apply evenly with excellent pigmentation.  The only issue I had was with 'Atlas' being quite hard in the pan to the extent that I found it very difficult to pick up any product even with a dampened brush.    I'm not sure why this is - I almost wonder if the eye shadow was pressed so hard into the pan during manufacturing?  My solution was to take an eye brow spoolie brush and use its bristles to very gently scrape or 'brush out' the eye shadow powder to loosen some product out and then pick those up with my eye shadow brush.  :-(
L - R: Atlas (matte), Romal (matte) and Marcella (shimmer).
Matte eye colour powder in 'Atlas' (soft beige taupe)
Matte eye colour powder in 'Romal' (dark brown-based smoke)
Shimmer eye colour powder in 'Marcella' (bronze plum violet)

Swatch Comparisons with Becca Enigma Palette
When I first saw the Balearic Love Palette, I immediately thought it was very similar to the Becca Enigma Palette that was released as part of their 'Fallen Angel' Collection (see my review of the palette HERE).  Below are swatches from both palettes which show the differences.
  • Enigma Palette's (EB) 'Silesia' (1) is a matte dark greyish smoke whereas Balearic Love Palette's (BLP) 'Romal' (2) is a matte dark brown-based smoke.
  • EB's 'Surah' (3) is a rather soft mauve mushroom with only the slightest shimmer that's barely noticeable, whereas BLP's 'Marcella' (4) is clearly much more shimmery and is a bronze plummy violet that is more vibrant.
  • EB's 'Armure' (5) is a matte soft fawn whereas BLP's 'Atlas' (6) is a matte soft beige taupe.
I tried to recreate the eye look on the campaign ad photo, and I must say in the beginning I was unsure how it looked on me as it was not a look I'm used to given how dramatic it is! After a while though I did like it! :-) I always love how such dramatic smokey eyes looked on others, but could never really appreciate it on me, I think in the end you just have to practice and start with something you're comfortable with and then slowly build from there and one can get used to it. You can certainly do that with this palette, but I really think that once you wear it more dramatically this palette really shines through and how it's really meant to be worn. This palette is sure to give you those sexy eyes. My hubby seems to like the look! LOL. To make it day appropriate, I like to use a light wash of 'Marcella' shimmer powder on the lid and use 'Romal' to line the eyes. I will probably endeavour to recreate the dramatic eye look on a night out when I'm feeling brave enough as it is quite lovely, too. ;-)

Bottom Line
This is a great palette for creating an intensely deep and dramatic smokey eye look using bronze, plum and violet hues. The shimmer adds a hint of mystery, dimension and interest to the eyes so they don't get lost in so much depth of colour. It's fairly quick and easy to create a dramatic look due to the very finely milled, smooth blendable texture of the powder and the intense pigmentation.  It's a shame that I found 'Atlas' to have been pressed so hard in the pan that it's hard to pick up - but, perhaps this is just this particular one that I got (you may have better luck).
